The biggest item in the costs of a household is certainly the costs for heating, regardless of whether you heat with electricity, gas or get thermal energy from a heating plant. Smart heating prevents unnecessary waste of energy with optimal heating of rooms, based on the principle of determining the desired temperature in each room.
The biggest waste of energy is classic heating, where you manually adjust the thermostat depending on the feeling of coldness or the stay in the room, thereby the room is either excessively cooled or heated. Every °C more means 6% more energy consumption, now you can conclude for yourself how much is saved through smart heating.
Devices that have become everyday in our homes can be used for smart heating today, namely routers, the vast majority of you have home internet, and thus a router.
The Fritzbox router supports smart heating
The German company AVM is the manufacturer of one of the most famous and best-selling routers on the European market, these are the models known by the name Fritzbox. Of course, in addition to that, the AVM company also offers smart valves FritzDECT 302 as well as wall thermostat FritzDECT 440.
Of course, there is also a smart socket with a temperature gauge if you use an electric heater, for example in the bathroom.
Only the connection of Fritzbox and additional devices is not via Wifi connection, but a DECT connection is used, which the router uses to connect wireless phones. The DECT connection is stable compared to the Wifi network and has greater availability. Connecting the router and smart valves, wall thermostat, or smart socket is very simple and plug-and-play.
With the smart valve, you also get adapters for the radiator, so you just have to remove the mechanical valve, put on the appropriate adapter and mount the FritzDECT valve. You can control or adjust the smart valves via the Fritzbox interface, which you access using an internet browser and an address fritz.box.
Of course, AVM also offers an App for smartphones, so it is possible to completely manage the entire heating process using a mobile phone. It is possible to make heating plans for individual days so that for each smart valve you determine when and to what temperature it should heat the room.
For example, you use the bathroom in the morning for one hour, the room is heated 1/2 hour before getting up to a temperature of 22 °C, after that the temperature is reduced to 19 °C and again in the evening before use to a temperature of 22 °C.
With this method of heating, the room is never overheated, it does not take a lot of time and energy to heat up to the desired temperature, and most importantly, the space is only heated when we use it.
Instructions for smart valves as well as the entire AVM “smart heating” program are available on the manufacturer’s website.
Smart valves also protect your radiators from limescale
, so they open and close briefly once a week and outside the heating season to prevent limescale and radiator valve damage.AVM application for smart heating
You can also use the AVM Smart Home application to manage other components from the program of the specified manufacturer, especially interesting is the management outside the reach of the home Wi-Fi network. So it is possible to adjust the heating even when you are not at home, in order for your Fritzbox to be connected to the AVM Smart Home application even outside the home network, you need to do the following:
You must register for free on the AVM portal myfritz.net, after confirming the registration, your Fritzbox will be connected via VPN networks with your smartphone and beyond the range of your home Wifi.
Open the Fritzbox interface at fritz.box and in the menu select the item Internet >> MyFRITZ!-Konto
, enter your e-mail address to which you will receive a link to confirm registration. You still have to choose a password and the registration is complete.Just connecting the AVM Smart Home application to your Fritzbox is very simple and plug-and-play, after connecting to the router, the application shows you all the Smart Home devices that are connected to your device and enables their management.
Fritzbox also supports Smart Home devices from other manufacturers with the DECT ULE HAN FUN standard. You can see a list of these devices here.
In addition to the expensive version of smart valves from AVM, you can also use the model Comet DECT from the company Eutronic, which is far cheaper in price, approx. €35.
As you can see, it is possible to make the heating of your home smart in a simple way and thereby save energy and, of course, money. The fact that Fritzbox is in operation 24 hours a day and has the ability to manage smart devices is an ideal solution.
